Elementary Education (K-6 Licensure), B.S. (121 hrs)

Location(s): Hattiesburg Campus, Tradition Campus


University and General Education Curriculum (38-40 hrs)


All undergraduate degrees require completion of the University and General Education Curriculum (UEC/GEC). Depending upon the degree program chosen, some GEC categories have specific course requirements. Refer to the comments in each category and always consult your degree plan and advisor when selecting courses. 

GEC 01 Written Communication (6 hrs)


GEC 02 Humanities and Fine Arts (12 hrs)


2.1 Literature (3 hrs)


Select 1 course. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Fine Arts, or any teacher education degree (except Music Education) must complete a minimum of 6 hrs of literature. ENG 1010 and ENG 1020 must be completed prior to enrolling in ENG 2110 or ENG 2120.

2.2 History (6 hrs)


Select 1 option. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts must take HIS 1010 and HIS 1020.

2.3 Fine Arts (3 hrs)


Select 1 course. Students majoring in one of the fine arts must select a course from one of the other two areas of study.

GEC 05 Mathematics (3 hrs)


Select 1 course.

UEC 03 Health and Physical Fitness (1-3 hrs)


Select from the following options. 

  •  Activity courses (1-2 hours) Military science, varsity sports, marching band, and cheerleading may be used to satisfy this requirement.  

       *BSN - 1 hour; all other degrees, 2 hours;

UEC 04 Writing Intensive Requirement


Select one. Students should consult their advisor before choosing the appropriate choice for their degree plan.

UEC 05 Senior Capstone Requirement (See Degree Plan)


Refer to University and General Education Curriculum  for details about the senior capstone (SC) requirement.

Program Curriculum


This program meets the teacher licensure preparation requirements of the State of Mississippi. William Carey University cannot determine whether the program meets teacher licensure requirements in any other state. Students seeking licensure in another state should consult that state’s licensure office to determine whether this program meets licensure requirements. Refer to Teacher Education Program Requirements  for admission, progression, and graduation requirements.

Additional Program Requirements (21 hrs)


*Course satisfies a GEC requirement and a program requirement but credit is counted only once toward total hours to degree. Grades for these courses should be marked on the degree planner in the appropriate GEC section and in this section.

Science Requirement (7 hrs)


In addition to the GEC 04 4-hr lab science course required for all BS degrees, an additional 7 hrs of science is required. On the degree planner, mark the grade for the first 4-hr lab science course in GEC 04 and mark the grades for the additional 7 hrs of science courses below.

Academic Endorsements / Program Elective (3 hrs)


The following endorsements are embedded in the degree plan and do not require any additional coursework: English, General Science, Reading, and Social Studies.

Academic endorsements in other areas are available but are not required. Refer to Teacher Education Academic Endorsement Requirements  for additional endorsement areas and course requirements. A minimum grade of ‘C’ is required.

DEG 02 General Electives


This degree requires a minimum of 121 hrs and, when completed as described, does not require any elective credit.

Hours To Degree


This degree requires a minimum of 121 hrs of course credit. No more than 50% of the required 121 hrs (60 hrs) applied to this degree may be earned at a community/junior college. At least 40 hrs of earned coursework must be numbered 300 or above. The last 25% of the required 121 hrs (30 hrs) must be earned at William Carey University. Verify that you have completed the credit hrs required for this degree by recording completed hrs below.
