Teacher Education Academic Endorsement Requirements

Location(s): Hattiesburg Campus, Tradition Campus, Baton Rouge Teaching Site, 100% Online, Hybrid


Elementary Education (K-6 Licensure), B.S. (121 hrs)  has the following endorsements embedded within the degree plan: English (7-12), General Science (7-12), Reading (K-12), and Social Studies (7-12). No additional coursework is required and no additional endorsements are required. However, elementary education students may add additional endorsements by completing specific coursework as indicated below. All coursework, including any additional endorsement coursework, must be completed prior to enrolling in EDU 4830 Residency II: Student Teaching in the Elementary School .

Students majoring in secondary or K-12 teacher education programs may elect to add supplemental academic endorsements to their degree plan by completing specific coursework as indicated below. Students interested in adding an endorsement(s) to their degree plan must notify and obtain consent from their major area of study prior to enrolling in the required courses. Students interested in enrolling in an ECE, EDR, or EDU-prefix course, other than those courses required by their respective degree plan, must obtain permission from the School of Education prior to enrolling. All coursework, including endorsement coursework, must be completed prior to enrolling in EDU 4840 Residency II: Student Teaching in the Secondary School  or EDU 4960 Residency II: Student Teaching in K-12 Subjects .

The Pre-K endorsement is available only to elementary education majors; secondary and K-12 teacher education majors are not eligible.

Remedial and developmental courses cannot be used to satisfy an endorsement requirement. All endorsement courses require a minimum grade of ‘C’.

A minimum grade of ‘C’ is required in each course.

General Science (7-12) Endorsement (18 hrs)


A minimum grade of ‘C’ is required in each course.

Health Education (K-12) Endorsement (12 hrs)


This endorsement program is approved by the Mississippi Department of Education; substitutions are not allowed. A minimum grade of ‘C’ is required in each course.

Mathematics (7-8) Endorsement (21 hrs)


A minimum grade of ‘C’ is required in each course.

Pre-K Endorsement (12 hrs)


The Pre-K endorsement is available only to elementary education majors; secondary and K-12 teacher education majors are not eligible. This endorsement program is approved by the Mississippi Department of Education; substitutions are not allowed. A minimum grade of ‘C’ is required in each course.

Reading (K-12) Endorsement (15 hrs)


This endorsement program is approved by the Mississippi Department of Education; substitutions are not allowed. A minimum grade of ‘C’ is required in each course.

Social Studies (7-12) Endorsement (18 hrs)


A minimum grade of ‘C’ is required in each course.

STEM (K-12) Endorsement (12 hrs)


This 12-hour endorsement program prepares prospective teachers to incorporate and integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics into K-12 instruction. This endorsement program is approved by the Mississippi Department of Education; substitutions are not allowed. A minimum grade of ‘C’ is required in each course.
