University and General Education Curriculum (38-40 hrs)


All undergraduate degrees require completion of the University and General Education Curriculum (UEC/GEC). Depending upon the degree program chosen, some GEC categories have specific course requirements. Refer to the comments in each category and always consult your degree plan and advisor when selecting courses. 

GEC 01 Written Communication (6 hrs)


GEC 02 Humanities and Fine Arts (12 hrs)


2.1 Literature (3 hrs)


Select 1 course. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Fine Arts, or any teacher education degree (except Music Education) must complete a minimum of 6 hrs of literature. ENG 1010 and ENG 1020 must be completed prior to enrolling in ENG 2110 or ENG 2120.

2.2 History (6 hrs)


Select 1 option. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts must take HIS 1010 and HIS 1020.

2.3 Fine Arts (3 hrs)


Select 1 course. Students majoring in one of the fine arts must select a course from one of the other two areas of study.

GEC 05 Mathematics (3 hrs)


Select 1 course.

UEC 03 Health and Physical Fitness (1-3 hrs)


Select from the following options. 

  •  Activity courses (1-2 hours) Military science, varsity sports, marching band, and cheerleading may be used to satisfy this requirement.  

       *BSN - 1 hour; all other degrees, 2 hours;

UEC 04 Writing Intensive Requirement


Select one. Students should consult their advisor before choosing the appropriate choice for their degree plan.

UEC 05 Senior Capstone Requirement (See Degree Plan)


Refer to University and General Education Curriculum  for details about the senior capstone (SC) requirement.

Program Curriculum


This program meets the teacher licensure preparation requirements of the State of Mississippi. William Carey University cannot determine whether the program meets teacher licensure requirements in any other state. Students seeking licensure in another state should consult that state’s licensure office to determine whether this program meets licensure requirements. Refer to Teacher Education Program Requirements  for admission, progression, and graduation requirements.

DEG 02 Teacher Education Requirements (36 hrs)


*Course satisfies GEC 03 and a program requirement, but is counted only once toward total hours to degree; record the grade in GEC 03 section and in this section. All EDU and ENG-prefix courses, and any courses used to complete an additional academic endorsement require a minimum grade of ‘C’.

DEG 03 Additional BA Degree Requirements (12 hrs)


In addition to completing the UEC/GEC, students seeking a Bachelor of Arts must complete additional courses as indicated below. Some degree plans require specific courses (e.g., ENG 2120, PHI 2500, etc.) and some students may need to complete lower-level foreign language courses before enrolling in intermediate/upper-level courses. As courses are completed, mark them on the degree planner in this section. If additional foreign language courses are required, record them in the General Electives section of the degree planner.

DEG 04 General Electives (11 hrs)


This degree plan requires 11 hours of elective credit for a total of 128 hours. Consult your faculty advisor to ensure that your choice of electives or the addition of a minor area of study is compatible with your educational and career goals. If you declare a minor or a supplemental teacher education academic endorsement , print the corresponding planner from this catalog, complete the planner as you complete the required courses, and submit the planner with your degree application at the conclusion of your studies. Otherwise, record elective courses in the General Electives section at the end of the degree planner.

Hours To Degree


This degree requires a minimum of 128 hrs of course credit. No more than 50% of the required 128 hrs (64 hrs) applied to this degree may be earned at a community college. At least 40 hrs of earned coursework must be numbered 300 or above. The last 25% of the required 128 hrs (32 hrs) must be earned at William Carey University. Verify that you have completed the credit hrs required for this degree by recording completed hrs below.
