Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, B.S. (125 hrs)

Location(s): Hattiesburg Campus, 100% Online


University and General Education Curriculum (38-40 hrs)


All undergraduate degrees require completion of the University and General Education Curriculum (UEC/GEC). Depending upon the degree program chosen, some GEC categories have specific course requirements. Refer to the comments in each category and always consult your degree plan and advisor when selecting courses. 

GEC 01 Written Communication (6 hrs)


GEC 02 Humanities and Fine Arts (12 hrs)


2.1 Literature (3 hrs)


Select 1 course. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Fine Arts, or any teacher education degree (except Music Education) must complete a minimum of 6 hrs of literature. ENG 1010 and ENG 1020 must be completed prior to enrolling in ENG 2110 or ENG 2120.

2.2 History (6 hrs)


Select 1 option. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts must take HIS 1010 and HIS 1020.

2.3 Fine Arts (3 hrs)


Select 1 course. Students majoring in one of the fine arts must select a course from one of the other two areas of study.

GEC 05 Mathematics (3 hrs)


Select 1 course.

UEC 03 Health and Physical Fitness (1-3 hrs)


Select from the following options. 

  •  Activity courses (1-2 hours) Military science, varsity sports, marching band, and cheerleading may be used to satisfy this requirement.  

       *BSN - 1 hour; all other degrees, 2 hours;

UEC 04 Writing Intensive Requirement


Select one. Students should consult their advisor before choosing the appropriate choice for their degree plan.

Refer to University and General Education Curriculum  for details about the senior capstone (SC) requirement.

Program Curriculum


This program of study does not lead to teacher licensure in Mississippi and William Carey University cannot determine whether the program meets teacher licensure requirements in any other state. Students wishing to obtain a Mississippi educator’s license should seek admission to the Physical Education (K-12 Licensure), B.S. (125 hrs)  program. Students seeking licensure in another state should consult that state’s licensure office to determine whether this program meets licensure requirements.

DEG 01 Major Area of Study (54-57 hrs)


Health Education Requirement (9 hrs)


*HEA 3000 satisfies UEC 03 and a program curriculum requirement, but credit is counted only once toward total hours to degree. Students who use HEA 3000 to satisfy UEC 03 will need to complete an additional 3 hrs within the program of study or general elective credit for a total of 128 hrs. *Students who do not complete HEA 3230 (WI), must select another approved writing intensive course, which shall only satisfy the university’s writing intensive requirement and not a program curriculum requirement, unless a substitution is approved by the department.

Select 4-5 courses. *Depending upon course selections made above, students may need to complete an additional course (15 hrs) to meet the 54-hour minimum requirement within the program of study.

DEG 02 Additional BS Degree Requirements (12 hrs)


In addition to completing the UEC/GEC, students seeking a Bachelor of Science degree must complete a minimum of 12 additional hours of science, mathematics, and/or technology. Courses used to satisfy this requirement may not be used to satisfy other degree requirements but may be used to satisfy requirements for a minor. Students are encouraged to select from and may take any combination of the courses listed below, although other courses may be acceptable. As courses are completed, mark them on the degree planner in this section. *Course has a prerequisite.

DEG 03 General Electives (19-23 hrs)


Depending upon course selections made above, this degree plan may require 19-23 hours of elective credit for a total of 128 hours. Consult your faculty advisor to ensure that your choice of electives or the addition of a minor area of study is compatible with your educational and career goals. If you declare a minor, print the corresponding planner from this catalog, complete the planner as you complete the required courses, and submit the planner with your degree application at the conclusion of your studies. Any remaining elective courses should be recorded in the General Electives section at the end of the degree planner.

Hours To Degree


This degree requires a minimum of 128 hrs of course credit. No more than 50% of the required 128 hrs (64 hrs) applied to this degree may be earned at a community college. At least 40 hrs of earned coursework must be numbered 300 or above. The last 25% of the required 128 hrs (32 hrs) must be earned at William Carey University. Verify that you have completed the credit hrs required for this degree by recording completed hrs below.
