Dance study at the Winter’s School of Music is designed to realize the purpose and specific objectives of the University. Students are challenged to develop their movement and creative capacities to fully realize their own self-expression, create and market dance as an art form, and utilize dance as a catalyst for leadership, fulfillment of service, and means to produce meaningful artistic contributions to society.
Admission:
DANCE AUDITION. Prior to admission, each candidate is required to attend a group or individual audition before the department chair assessing the candidate’s proficiency in ballet, modern, and dance improvisation. The audition will culminate in a sixty second solo performance. Virtual auditions will be arranged when necessary. Additionally, candidates will submit a resume of dance and related training, a one page essay explaining why the candidate is seeking a degree in dance, and three letters of recommendation including one from a dance educator, one from a general educator, and another from an acquaintance or mentor who can attest to the applicant’s responsibility and work ethic. Candidates seeking a minor in dance are not required to meet any of the above criteria.
Requirements
Bachelor of Science, Dance Major. University Core: 54 hours; Dance Major: 49 hours (Dance Technique—25 hours; Performance/Production/Choreography 11 hours; Theory—13 hours); Electives: 17 hours. Total: 120 hours.
NOTE: The Bachelor of Science in Dance degree does not meet the requirements for public school teaching.
Dance Minor: 20 hours (Dance Technique—12 hours; Performance/Production—2 hours; Dance Theory and Immersion—6 hours); three hours of Dance Electives coursework may be used to fulfill the 12 required Dance Technique hours.
Additional Requirements
- Dance majors and minors must make a grade of “C” or better in all dance courses.
- Dance majors and minors are responsible for acquiring all clothing and accessories required for coursework including but not limited to: dance attire (leotards, tights, shoes, dance shorts, dance undergarments, hair accessories, etc.), yoga mats, yoga blocks, yoga straps, foam rollers, resistance bands, and running shoes.
