Program Overview
- The M.A. in Christian Theology takes the best of the European model (cohorts, focus on independent research, etc.) and the best of the American model (seminars, colloquia, etc.) and seamlessly melds them together.
- This degree requires strong, independent research skills and offers students intense work evaluation from the professor, weekly lectures, and peer reviews via video.
- The program is offered fully online. However, some professors may choose to invite local students to lectures. Students who live locally may choose to attend lectures in person, but this is not required. All course information is posted online via Canvas.
- Courses cover the following theological disciplines: biblical theology, systematic theology, historical theology, and practical theology
- The courses are designed to allow students the academic freedom to explore their research interests.
- If students do not have a research interest when entering the program, exposure to the diverse theological disciplines offered in the M.A. in Christian Theology will allow them to see which area most interests them.
Program Admission and Graduation Requirements
- Hold a baccalaureate degree with a major or minor in Christian Studies or a similar course of study from an accredited college or university; If a student does not meet these requirements, they may take Rel 270, Rel 324, and Rel 424 at the undergraduate level before admittance is granted to the M.A. in Christian Theology.
- Complete the application for admission
- Submit two recommendation forms, one pastoral and one academic
- Have a GPA > 3.0 in the baccalaureate degree program; and
- Score at least a 3.5 on the GRE Writing Assessment*
- Probationary status may be granted for one semester if one of the program admission requirements is deficient. If the requirements are not met after one semester, the student will be dismissed from the program.
*The GRE score is waived for applicants who submit an academic research paper in the field of theology of at least 10 pages. The paper must reflect research and writing skills adequate for pursuing an advanced degree in theology.
Graduation Requirements
- Students must have successfully completed the plan of study with a GPA > 3.0 and no more than two ‘C’s during the program.
- All students must successfully pass an oral examination at the end of the program. Students who fail the oral exam are allowed to retake the exam once.
Program of Study (30 hrs)
Program instruction is conducted online, with an added feature of optional attendance at on-campus lectures. Students may choose to complete the non-thesis track of 30 hours or the thesis track of 36 hours, which is recommended for students who plan to pursue a PhD. |
