Ed.D. Pathway to a P-12 Administrator/Principal License (486)

Requirements


Program Overview

Students who have been accepted into the Ed.D. program and have completed three years of successful teaching in a P-12 setting may also take four additional classes (12 hours) and complete an internship (three trimesters/one hour each trimester) by documenting 400 hours of internship activities with two licensed P-12 administrators to meet the requirements to be recommended to the state department for a P-12 administrator/principal’s license (486).

Additional Admission Requirements

  • Hold a valid teaching license.
  • Provide documentation to the coordinator of the program certifying a minimum of three years teaching experience.

Additional Coursework for P-12 Administrative/Principal License Preparation

In order to include the option to obtain an administrator’s 486 license while completing the requirements for the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, the following courses are required:

  1. EDL 602 Roles of the Principal (3)  
  2. EDL 605 Human Resources Management (3)   
  3. EDL 606 Judicial and Ethics Considerations (3)   
  4. EDL 609 School Site Business Management (3)   
  5. EDL 635 Practicum and Internship (3)   

Progression

  • Complete all coursework in the Ed.D. and the additional four courses with a 3.0 GPA
  • Complete three hours (three trimesters) of internship by submitting 400 hours of administrative activities signed by your mentors
  • Successfully defend your dissertation
