Program Overview


William Carey University is uniquely positioned to offer a PhD in Neurodiverse Studies, leveraging the strengths of its existing programs in medicine, nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy, psychology, and education. This interdisciplinary framework creates an ideal environment for advancing research and professional practice in the growing field of neurodiversity. By drawing from the collective expertise of these diverse disciplines, the program fosters a comprehensive and collaborative approach to understanding and supporting individuals with neurodiverse conditions. As the first program of its kind at a private or public university in the United States, William Carey University is a trailblazer in this dynamic and evolving field. This PhD program is fully online and will offer professionals a unique platform to deepen their knowledge and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of neurodiverse studies.

Program Admission Requirements


1. Submit an online application to William Carey University Graduate Admissions.

2. Provide official transcript (s) of all college work completed to date. An official transcript is defined as one issued directly from the institution to William Carey University.

3. Hold a master’s or specialist’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with the following conditions: 

a. Students with a master’s degree will complete the prescribed program.

b. Students with a specialist’s degree in emotional and behavioral disorders may be allowed to receive credit for program requirements at the discretion of the program coordinator, pending verification of syllabi.  Students would complete the remainder of the doctoral requirements.

4. Have a graduate GPA > 3.25 in the highest degree obtained (master’s or specialist’s). OR competitive scores on the GRE (Quantitative, verbal, and written components).

5. Submit two recommendations from present or previous supervisors.

6. Submit a current resume that includes your leadership experience and community service and career goals.

7. Complete an interview with the program admissions committee.

8. Submit a writing sample to the program coordinator via the Mach form from SOE.

No student will be admitted on a provisional or probationary basis. Students may transfer six hours of approved coursework from an institution that is fully accredited by a recognized accrediting agency. Coursework used in a previous degree may not be used toward the doctorate.
