Program Overview
In alignment with the William Carey University mission statements, the mission of the occupational therapy program is to create a challenging and caring Christian academic community, preparing students to become autonomous and competent entry-level occupational therapy practitioners who value lifelong learning, responsible leadership, service in diverse low-resource settings, and engagement in local and global health promotion issues. The Occupational Therapy program at William Carey is committed to preparing students for these professional responsibilities by providing high-quality academic and clinical educational experiences based on adult learning principles. Emphasis is placed on reflective practice and competency-based learning to promote clinical reasoning. Students are self-directed and assume responsibility for their learning, with the faculty guiding the education process by providing rich, diverse, interactive learning experiences that foster clinical decision-making and the integration of subject material. Core to the professional educational program at William Carey will be engagement in experiences that foster: - Competency in occupation-based intervention
- Interprofessional collaboration
- Reflective and empathic based practice
- Community and global cultural competence
- Research application and evidence-based practice
- Advocacy for populations served
Program Admission Requirements
Prospective Student must: - Graduated from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program with an associate’s degree
- Must hold an unencumbered OTA license throughout the duration of the program
- Complete all sections of the OTCAS application by the deadline date at https://otcas.liaisoncas.com using Institutional Code 7400. No documents should be sent directly to William Carey University.
- Completion of OT prerequisite courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. A grade of a “B” or above in each prerequisite course is recommended, however, no grade lower than a “C” will be accepted in these courses.
- One year of full-time work experience as a licensed occupational therapy assistant
- A professional resume
- Provide three letters of recommendation. It is required that one of the recommendation letters be from a licensed occupational therapy practitioner.
- It is most important that the people providing recommendations know you well so that they can provide specific examples of your strengths and accomplishments. Letters of recommendation must be submitted through OTCAS.
- After the initial processing of applications, selected applicants will complete an admission interview.
Prerequisites
All courses must be completed with a “C” or higher prior to being admitted to the program - Human Anatomy with lab and Human Physiology with lab OR Human Anatomy and Physiology I with lab and Human Anatomy and Physiology II with lab 8 hrs
- Introduction to Psychology 3 hrs
- Abnormal Psychology 3 hrs
- Human Growth and Development 3 hrs
- Sociology or Social Sciences 3 hrs
- Statistics 3 hrs
- Oral Communication 2-3 hrs
Program Progression
- Progression will be based on the Academic Standing requirements found in the 2024-2025 Graduate Catalog.
- The academic standing policy found in the WCU Graduate Catalog will be adhered to by the OT program.
- A student will be placed on academic probation if the student has a cumulative GPA of less than 3.00 at the end of any academic semester for the first time.
- In cases where a student falls below this level, the student is required to meet with their MOT academic advisor to be placed on academic remediation (see MOT Student Handbook for Policy) and develop a remediation plan that supports the student in the area(s) of academic difficulty to remove probation status.
- To remove the remediation status, the student must achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 by the end of the next academic semester following being placed on probation.
- In courses designated Pass/Fail or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, a grade of Pass or Satisfactory is required.
- A student receiving a grade of “F” in any course is defined as unacceptable and will result in dismissal from the program.
- A student who is not in compliance with ethical, professional behavior, or patient welfare guidelines of the program, after following due process guidelines of the program, may be permanently dismissed from the program.
- Students must complete the program within 33 months. All Level II Fieldwork must be completed within 12 months following completion of didactic course work.
- To be eligible for the degree of Master of Occupational Therapy, the student must fulfill all requirements of the university and complete all courses required for the Occupational Therapy major with a GPA > 3.0
Program of Study (80 hrs)
**The OTA to MOT bridge students will be awarded 6 credit hours based on holding an active, unencumbered OTA license and clinical experience. All students are required to have 80 credit hours for conferral of the MOT degree. |
