Occupational Therapy, Traditional MOT (80 hrs)

Program Overview


The Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) degree is designed to prepare entry-level clinical specialists and leaders in healthcare management.  The program will offer experience-based learning in a variety of healthcare settings. Students will be placed in diverse communities working with individuals, families, and communities in need. Students will engage in interprofessional collaboration to prepare for independent practice as an occupational therapist and research as a component of the capstone project.  Graduates will be eligible to sit for the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy examination.

Program Admission Requirements


Prospective Students must: 

  • Hold an earned baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Degree must be conferred prior to entering the MOT program. 

  • Complete all sections of the OTCAS application by deadline date at https://otcas.liaisoncas.com using Institutional Code 7400. No documents should be sent directly to William Carey University. 

  • Completion of OT prerequisite courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale). A grade of “B” or above in each prerequisite course is recommended; however, no grade lower than a “C” will be accepted in these courses. It is recommended that prerequisites be completed within seven years of the relevant application cycle.

  • Complete 40 hours of observation under a licensed occupational therapist or licensed OTA in two different settings. A minimum of 50% of hours must be observed under a licensed occupational therapist. Must be verified and submitted electronically to OTCAS. 

  • Provide three letters of recommendation. It is required that one of the recommendation letters be from a licensed occupational therapy practitioner and one be from a current or former college instructor.  

  • It is most important that the people providing recommendations know you well so that they can provide specific examples of your strengths and accomplishments. Letters of recommendation must be submitted through OTCAS by following these instructions

  • After the initial processing of applications, selected applicants will complete an admission interview.  

Prerequisites


All courses must be completed with a “C” or higher prior to being admitted to the program

  • Human Anatomy with lab and Human Physiology with lab OR Human Anatomy and Physiology I with lab and Human Anatomy and Physiology II with lab 8 hrs
  • Introduction to Psychology 3 hrs
  • Abnormal Psychology 3 hrs
  • Human Growth and Development (Life Span Development) 3 hrs
  • Sociology or Social Sciences  3 hrs
  • Statistics  3 hrs
  • Medical Terminology  1-3 hrs
  • Oral Communication   2-3 hrs

Program Progression


Progression will be based on the Academic Standing requirements found in the 2024-2025 Graduate Catalog.  

  • The academic standing policy found in the WCU Graduate Catalog will be adhered to by the OT program.  

  • A student will be placed on academic probation if the student has a cumulative GPA of less than 3.00 at the end of any academic semester for the first time. 

  • In cases where a student falls below this level, the student is required to meet with their MOT academic advisor to be placed on academic remediation (see MOT Student Handbook for Policy and description of the OT Academic and Professional Standards Committee) and develop a remediation plan that supports the student in the area(s) of academic difficulty to remove probation status.  

  • To remove the remediation status, the student must achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 by the end of the next academic semester following being placed on probation.  

  • In courses designated Pass/Fail or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, a grade of Pass or Satisfactory is required. 

  • A student receiving a grade of “F” in any course is defined as unacceptable and will result in dismissal from the program.  

  •  A student who is not in compliance with ethical, professional behavior, or patient welfare guidelines of the program, after following due process guidelines of the program, may be permanently dismissed from the program. 

  • Students must complete the program within 36 months. Extensions may be granted by the Department Head for good cause. All Level II Fieldwork must be completed within 12 months following completion of didactic course work. 

To be eligible for the degree of Master of Occupational Therapy, the student must fulfill all requirements of the university and complete all courses required for the Occupational Therapy major with a GPA > 3.0
