Program Overview


The department of history and social science seeks to provide Master of Education students with an opportunity to expand their methodological, interpretative and factual acumen in social studies. The program promotes an understanding of past and present human societies to enhance student learning and to develop content knowledge in curriculum content, unit and lesson design, teaching strategies, assessment and evaluation methods, media technology appropriate for teaching social studies in the K-12 schools.

Typically, the M.Ed. candidate who wishes to specialize in social studies will be an undergraduate history or social science major or minor. Candidates who do not have an undergraduate major/minor in history or social science will have their undergraduate transcript evaluated so that academic deficiencies in history and social science may be addressed before beginning the graduate program in social studies.

 

Program Admission Requirements


  • Complete an online application Apply to Carey through Graduate Admissions
  • Submit all official transcripts electronically to Graduate Admissions
  • Hold a baccalaureate degree in history / social studies (or a minor in history / social studies) from an accredited college or university
  • Have a GPA > 2.5 for the last 64 hours of undergraduate work or a cumulative GPA > 2.5 with a GPA > 3.0 in all prior social studies courses
  • Hold or qualify to hold a Class A teacher’s license (provide a copy) or sign a waiver of certification form

Transfer Credit

A maximum of six hours of graduate credit may be transferred from another accredited institution. All transfer courses must be approved prior to degree application.

Program Progression Requirements


  • Students must maintain a GPA > 3.0 with no grade less than a ‘C’ and must complete all requirements within six years of admission into the program.

Social Studies Concentration (15 hrs)


  • Select 15 hours of graduate history / social science education courses.

Electives (6 hrs)


  • Select 2 graduate courses with approval of faculty advisor,

Program Requirements and Professional Licensure Disclosure
