Program Overview
The mission of the M.Ed. in Physical Education degree program is to provide individuals with the knowledge necessary to educate others physically by giving them a clear understanding of procedures, methods, techniques, and materials for effective and competent teaching. The goal of the program is to produce graduates who have strong teaching skills with an in-depth knowledge of the subject and to produce graduates whose skills in planning, implementation, adaptation, and evaluation have been enhanced.
Goals and Objectives
The specific goals and objectives of the Master of Education program are to provide students with opportunities to become confident, caring, and reflective educators by becoming strong professional leaders in their chosen discipline and area of
- earning academic credentials that may allow them to advance in the chosen field of employment;
- experiencing personal growth and understanding through in-depth study in the area of concentration and certification;
- expanding the students’ Christian values through coursework and campus activities;
- building upon their undergraduate studies and work experience to broaden their knowledge base in the teaching field; and
- becoming strong professional leaders in their chosen discipline and area of certification
Program Admission Requirements
In order for students to be admitted to the program the following admission requirements must be met:
- Complete and file with the graduate education office the application packet for admission to the university, which must include a signed memorandum of understanding addressing that the degree will not lead to a teaching license. This application must be submitted prior to registering for classes and before the deadline established by the graduate admission office.
- Official Transcripts from each post-secondary college or university attended.
- Two recommendations from past or current supervisors
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (undergraduate GPA of the last 60 semester hours)
Students are allowed to transfer up to six hours of graduate work from another college or university to be applied to the MED in Physical Education degree. The individual student is responsible for asking for possible transfer credit and providing the appropriate documents, course catalog description, and syllabus, for review by the Department Chair. Approval of transfer credit lies with the School of Education (See WCU Graduate Catalog; request to transfer policy).
Program Progression Requirements
Candidates for the Master of Education degree in Physical Education must complete the required 30 semester hours and pass all courses with a “B” or better. An overall 3.0 GPA on graduate courses taken at William Carey University is required for graduation. Only two grades lower than a “B” are allowed. Upon receiving a second grade lower than a “B,” the student is advised to repeat one of the first two grades before continuing in the program. Students making a third grade lower than a “B” are dismissed from the program.
