Program Overview
The School of Education offers K-12 supplemental endorsements. A supplemental endorsement may be earned by completing prescribed coursework as indicated below. These programs have been approved for licensure by the Mississippi Department of Education. A student must be admitted to an appropriate teacher education program to take coursework leading to a supplemental endorsement.
Emotional / Behavioral Disorders (12 hrs)
This endorsement prepares teachers to conduct functional behavioral assessments and develop intervention plans, as well as implement, monitor, and instruct children and youth with significant emotional and behavioral disorders in educational settings and residential facilities. This endorsement may only be added to a valid Class A license in mild/moderate disabilities.
Gifted Education (15 hrs)
K-6 Education (15 hrs)
This endorsement prepares teachers to effectively work with children and youth in grades K-6. After completion of courses, educators must pass the Foundations of Reading Test (190). Applicants must have an existing 5-year standard renewable teaching license and provide documentation of 3 years of classroom experience.
Mild / Moderate Disabilities (18 hrs)
This endorsement prepares teachers to effectively and compassionately work with children and youth in elementary and high school through a comprehensive array of special education courses. The courses are pertinent to both special education teachers and general education teachers who work with students with special needs such as learning disabilities, developmental delays, visual impairments, hearing impairments, autism, mild intellectual disability, traumatic brain injury, and other impairments.
Effective January 2023, Mississippi Department of Education requires a passing score on of the Foundations of Reading exam prior to awarding a Mild/Moderate Disabilities (K-12) supplemental endorsement.
Reading Education (12 hrs)
Reading Education w/STEM (15 hrs)
Severe / Profound Disabilities (6 hrs)
This endorsement prepares teachers to conduct functional behavioral assessments and develop intervention plans, as well as implement, monitor, and instruct children and youth with profound disabilities in educational settings and residential facilities. This endorsement may only be added to a valid Class A license in mild/moderate disabilities.
STEM (12 hrs)
The STEM endorsement prepares practicing teachers to integrate and incorporate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into PreK-12 instruction. The program was developed in response to calls at the national and local levels to recruit, educate, and support STEM education.
Program Requirements and Professional Licensure Disclosure
Teacher education programs at William Carey University are designed to meet the professional competency standards for licensure in Mississippi. William Carey University cannot determine whether any program leads to licensure in any state other than Mississippi. It is recommended that students who intend to seek licensure in another state verify that their program of study meets the desired state’s licensure requirements.
Further, the Mississippi Department of Education establishes and maintains state licensure requirements, policies, and procedures, which supersede requirements listed in this catalog. Mandatory changes to this program of study will be communicated to the student through the School of Education.
