Program Overview
The School of Education serves to prepare confident, caring, and reflective educators within a Christian environment, from a liberal arts curriculum for both pre-service educators as well as advanced preparation for in-service educators.
The Master of Education in Elementary Education builds professional skills that affect positive changes in both K-6 classrooms and school districts. This program engages students in the most current research, technology, and evidence-based best practices in working with children at all levels to reach their highest potential. Throughout the program, students will turn theory into practical classroom applications that can be used immediately.
Goals and Objectives
The specific goals and objectives of the Master of Education program are to provide students with opportunities to become confident, caring, and reflective educators by
- earning academic credentials that may allow them to advance in the chosen field of employment;
- experiencing personal growth and understanding through in-depth study in the area of concentration and certification;
- expanding the students’ Christian values through coursework and campus activities;
- building upon their undergraduate studies and work experience to broaden their knowledge base in the teaching field; and
- becoming strong professional leaders in their chosen discipline and area of certification.
Graduate Outcomes
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of teacher education and content appropriate to elementary education.
- Assess student learning through analysis of informal and formal performance indicators, feedback, monitoring, and guiding students in the classroom.
- Demonstrate content knowledge and performance skills when designing curriculum for differentiated instruction, the inclusion classroom, and the co-teaching design.
- Demonstrate instructional planning that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge and application of technology.
Program Admission Requirements
- Complete an online application and pay application fee
- Submit all official transcripts electronically to Graduate Admissions
- Have a GPA > 2.5 for the last 64 hours of undergraduate work or a cumulative GPA > 2.5
- Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
- Hold or qualify to hold a Class A teacher’s license and provide a copy
- Provide two recommendations from past or current supervisors
Transfer Credit
A maximum of six hours of graduate credit may be transferred from another accredited institution. All transfer courses must be approved prior to degree application.
Program Progression Requirements
- Students must maintain a GPA > 3.0 with no grade less than a ‘C’ and must complete all requirements within six years of admission into the program.

Program Requirements and Professional Licensure Disclosure
Teacher education programs at William Carey University are designed to meet the professional competency standards for licensure in Mississippi. William Carey University cannot determine whether any program leads to licensure in any state other than Mississippi. It is recommended that students who intend to seek licensure in another state verify that their program of study meets the desired state’s licensure requirements.
Further, the Mississippi Department of Education establishes and maintains state licensure requirements, policies, and procedures, which supersede requirements listed in this catalog. Mandatory changes to this program of study will be communicated to the student through the School of Education.
