Program Overview


The School of Education offers the Specialist of Education degree in Interscholastic Athletic Administration (IAA). This degree program has been fully approved for AAA licensure by the Mississippi Department of Education and approved by the Mississippi State Board of Education.

Students who have already earned a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership or related field may seek admission to the Interscholastic Athletic Administration program to earn the Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree. The Ed.S. degree includes 39 hours, which includes 33 hours in the IAA curriculum plus two courses in the Education Specialist curriculum.  

This program includes a minimum of 21 hours of PED coursework, which may qualify a student earning this degree to teach at a university or community college.

Graduate Outcomes


Students completing the IAA program will be able to demonstrate:

  • understanding of sport management issues;
  • effective planning of sports events and managing facilities;
  • competency in marketing and promoting programs;
  • knowledge of ethical and legal concepts; 
  • skill in finance and resource allocation;
  • understanding media operations;
  • effective leadership and organizational behavior; and
  • skill for effective project management.

Program Admission Requirements


Prospective students must:

  • Complete an online application and pay application fee.
  • Submit offical copies of all transcripts to Graduate Admissions via eScript or mailed from the institution.
  • Provide two recommendations from present or previous administrators who supervised your work.
  • Hold a master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA > 3.25.
  • Hold or qualify to hold a Class A teacher’s license (provide a copy) or sign a waiver of certification form.

Students who hold a Master’s degree in Interscholastic Athletic Administration from William Carey University are not eligible for the Specialist in Interscholastic Athletic Administration program.

Program Progression Requirements


  • Complete coursework with a cumulative GPA > 3.00 and no more than two ‘C’s.

Teacher education programs at William Carey University are designed to meet the professional competency standards for licensure in Mississippi. William Carey University cannot determine whether any program leads to licensure in any state other than Mississippi. It is recommended that students who intend to seek licensure in another state verify that their program of study meets the desired state’s licensure requirements. 

Further, the Mississippi Department of Education establishes and maintains state licensure requirements, policies, and procedures, which supersede requirements listed in this catalog. Mandatory changes to this program of study will be communicated to the student through the School of Education.
