Arabic Language Initiative (12 hrs)

Location(s): Hattiesburg Campus


The Arabic Language Initiative offers language and cultural training in the Middle Eastern country of Jordan. This language studies option is designed for students majoring in Intercultural Studies or Cross-Cultural Business Management, though any student is eligible to enroll. Completion of 12 hours of Arabic meets the language requirement of the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Students may complete their Arabic studies in one of two ways: 1) complete Arabic I/II on campus and then complete Arabic III/IV over a 3-month period while living in Amman, Jordan, or 2) complete all four courses over six to ten months while living in Amman.

Student Learning Outcomes 

  • Students will gain practical knowledge of Arab language, history, traditions, and culture.
  • Students will gain comparative insight between his or her worldview and the Arab worldview.
  • Students will gain personal experience to identify and cope with culture shock and cultural immersion in a safe environment.
  • Students will demonstrate marked progression in reading, hearing, speaking, and writing Arabic.
  • Students will possess a basic grasp of the major tenses of Arabic.
  • Students will reach, at minimal, the intermediate-low level of language proficiency, as assessed by their field supervisor.
  • Assessment and language evaluation will utilize American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and Oral Proficiency Assessment (OPI).
