The experienced faculty and staff of the Department of Psychology and Counseling are dedicated to fostering an environment in which students develop an appreciation for scientific inquiry, critical thinking, creative expression, and service to others. Students are provided the opportunity to build a foundation for understanding the theory and practice of the behavioral sciences through hands-on experiences within the traditional classroom and unique field settings.

The counseling degree offers concentrations in general counseling, child/adolescent counseling, Christian counseling, and gerontological counseling. Some of the settings in which our students gain experience include psychiatric hospitals, community mental health centers, adult daycares, addiction treatment facilities, nursing homes, adolescent offender programs, group homes, residential facilities for intellectually disabled individuals, sheltered workshops, religious counseling centers, pastoral care, and medical clinics. The department also offers a concentration is school psychometry and, for those who hold a master’s degree in education (MS AA Teacher Licensure) may add a supplemental endorsement in school psychometry.

The concentrations in general counseling, child/adolescent counseling, Christian counseling, and gerontological counseling are available at the Hattiesburg campus. The school psychometry concentration/endorsement is only available at the Tradition campus.
