William Carey University gives you the opportunity to earn your bachelor’s degree in education and become a licensed highly qualified elementary teacher or secondary teacher in a variety of concentration areas from the arts to the sciences. All the undergraduate degrees you may choose to pursue will ensure that you are well prepared for your own classroom as well as making sure you stand out from other teaching candidates.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction provides a rigorous program curriculum that prepare you to meet students where they are when they enter your classroom. Through a combination of classroom instruction and extensive field experiences, students will explore best practices for teaching students from all academic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds with the goal of achieving equity for all learners.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program of study, graduates will be able to:

Elementary Education (K-6 Licensure), B.S.

  • demonstrate knowledge of individual and group motivation and behavior to build an active learning environment;
  • demonstrate classroom management strategies that encourage positive social interaction, active learning, and self-motivation;
  • exhibit effective professional dispositions required to build a safe, growing learning environment in which all students can learn;
  • demonstrate understanding of how students differ in their learning styles and create instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners;
  • employ literacy skills to develop and implement an early literacy lesson on phonics;
  • demonstrate a variety of curriculum planning skills to plan an integrated unit of study (objectives, procedures, assessment, and differentiated instruction);
  • demonstrate content knowledge and performance skills across content pedagogy courses and assessment tests in preparation for the final field experience;
  • demonstrate pedagogical knowledge and application skills in learning and teaching; and
  • demonstrate knowledge and practice of the theories of literacy.
