University and General Education Curriculum (38-40 hrs)
All undergraduate degrees require completion of the University and General Education Curriculum (UEC/GEC). Depending upon the degree program chosen, some GEC categories have specific course requirements. Refer to the comments in each category and always consult your degree plan and advisor when selecting courses.
UEC 01 Biblical Studies (6 hrs)
GEC 01 Written Communication (6 hrs)
GEC 02 Humanities and Fine Arts (12 hrs)
2.1 Literature (3 hrs)
Select 1 course. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Fine Arts, or any teacher education degree (except Music Education) must complete a minimum of 6 hrs of literature. ENG 1010 and ENG 1020 must be completed prior to enrolling in ENG 2110 or ENG 2120.
2.2 History (6 hrs)
Select 1 option. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts must take HIS 1010 and HIS 1020.
2.3 Fine Arts (3 hrs)
Select 1 course. Students majoring in one of the fine arts must select a course from one of the other two areas of study.
GEC 03 Social and Behavioral Sciences (3 hrs)
Select 1 course. Students seeking a degree in teacher education must complete PSY 2010.
GEC 04 Natural and Physical Sciences (3-4 hrs)
Select 1 course. Students seeking a Bachelor of Science or any teacher education degree must complete at least one lab-science course (4 hrs).
GEC 05 Mathematics (3 hrs)
Select 1 course.
UEC 02 Oral Communication (3 hrs)
Select 1 course.
UEC 03 Health and Physical Fitness (1-3 hrs)
Select from the following options.
- Activity courses (1-2 hours) Military science, varsity sports, marching band, and cheerleading may be used to satisfy this requirement.
*BSN - 1 hour; all other degrees, 2 hours;
UEC 04 Writing Intensive Requirement
Select one. Students should consult their advisor before choosing the appropriate choice for their degree plan.
DEG 01 Major Area of Study (33-36 hrs)
*Course satisfies GEC 03 and a program requirement, but credit is counted only once toward total hours to degree. Students should take a course other than PSY 2010 to satisfy GEC 03.
**An emphasis in Trauma is available; to add the emphasis, complete the courses as indicated.
DEG 02 Additional BS Degree Requirements (12 hrs)
In addition to completing the UEC/GEC, students seeking a Bachelor of Science degree must complete a minimum of 12 additional hours of science, mathematics, and/or technology. Courses used to satisfy this requirement may not be used to satisfy other degree requirements but may be used to satisfy requirements for a minor. Students are encouraged to select from and may take any combination of the courses listed below, although other courses may be acceptable. As courses are completed, mark them on the degree planner in this section. *Course has a prerequisite.
DEG 03 Minor or Second Major Required (12-24 hrs)
This degree requires a minor area of study or a second major. Consult your faculty advisor to ensure that your choice of minor or second major is compatible with your educational and career goals. This section reflects the range of hours required for a minor; choosing a second major requires additional hours. Upon declaring a minor or second major, print the corresponding planner from this catalog, complete the planner as you complete the required courses, and submit the planner with your degree application at the conclusion of your studies.
DEG 04 General Electives (16-32 hrs)
Depending upon course selections made above, including the addition of a minor or second major, this degree may require 16-32 hours of elective credit for a total of 128 hours. Consult your faculty advisor to ensure that your choice of electives or the addition of a second minor is compatible with your educational and career goals. If you declare an additional minor, print the corresponding planner from this catalog, complete the planner as you complete the required courses, and submit the planner with your degree application at the conclusion of your studies. Otherwise, record elective courses in the General Electives section at the end of the degree planner.
Hours To Degree
This degree requires a minimum of 128 hrs of course credit. No more than 50% of the required 128 hrs (64 hrs) applied to this degree may be earned at a community college. At least 40 hrs of earned coursework must be numbered 300 or above. The last 25% of the required 128 hrs (32 hrs) must be earned at William Carey University. Verify that you have completed the credit hrs required for this degree by recording completed hrs below.
