Program Overview


The Master of Music Education (M.M.Ed.) is an online program that provides an opportunity for music educators to further develop musicianship and enhance pedagogical expertise toward becoming master teachers. The program supports and advances the purpose of William Carey University which is to provide quality liberal arts and professional education programs within a caring Christian academic community. Students will be encouraged to develop their highest potential in scholarship, leadership, and service. Upon completion of the M.M.Ed., students will be eligible for an advanced license (AA) to teach in the state of Mississippi. It is left up to the individual student to determine how the M.M.Ed. may be utilized to obtain advanced licensure in other states.

Program Admission Requirements


In addition to the general admission requirements stated in the graduate catalog, entrance into the M.M.Ed. program is based on the following requirements:

  • All students accepted must have completed a bachelor’s degree in music and must provide official transcripts as documentation.
  • Entering students must have an undergraduate GPA > 2.75 over the last 64 credit hours of coursework.
  • Students accepted into the program must either have a teaching license or have successfully passed Praxis II (music content only) examination.
  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL exam) is required of all applicants, international or U.S. citizen, whose native language is not English. A minimum score of 550 (or 213 computer-based) is required for admission.

Teacher education programs at William Carey University are designed to meet the professional competency standards for licensure in Mississippi. William Carey University cannot determine whether any program leads to licensure in any state other than Mississippi. It is recommended that students who intend to seek licensure in another state verify that their program of study meets the desired state’s licensure requirements. 

Further, the Mississippi Department of Education establishes and maintains state licensure requirements, policies, and procedures, which supersede requirements listed in this catalog. Mandatory changes to this program of study will be communicated to the student through the School of Education.
