Biomedical Science, M.B.S. (34 hrs)

Program Overview


To meet the educational and career goals of a diverse study population, the Master’s of Biomedical Science (MBS) offers three tracks of study from which to choose - pre-medical/dental/physical therapy, pre-pharmacy, and pre-health professional. Each track of study requires a total of 34 hours, taught primarily by medical school faculty.

Graduate Outcomes


Upon degree completion, graduates will be able to demonstrate:

  • Understanding of the fundamental concepts of human anatomy;
  • Understanding of the fundamental concepts of human physiology;
  • Understanding of the fundamental concepts of biochemistry; and
  • Ability to conduct and present research in the field of biomedical science.

Program Admission Requirements


  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with official transcripts including the following courses:
    • Physics: 8 credit hours
    • General/Inorganic Chemistry: 8 credit hours
    • Organic Chemistry: 8 credit hours
    • Biology: 12 credit hours
  • Two letters of evaluation from professors, physicians, or other appropriate professionals who can speak to your potential for success in a graduate program.
  • One page personal statement. 
  • Complete the WCU graduate admission application.
  • Applications completed after July 15th are not assured of consideration for the next cohort.
  • Successful applicants must make a $250 nonrefundable deposit to hold a position in the class. The deposit is applied to the cost of tuition upon matriculation.

Program Progression and Graduation Requirements


Program Progression Requirements

  • Students must pass all required courses in each academic term in order to progress to the next academic term.
  • A student has failed a course when he/she receives a grade of ‘F’ at the completion of the course, after any approved remediation has been completed. The WCUMBS Program Director, with approval of the WCU Vice President for Academic Affairs, may allow a student to proceed when repeating a course is not an option due to the specific course not being available. The Course Director and WCUMBS Program Director will review remediation options for the student before final approval.
  • The WCUMBS Committee will make recommendations for any student with a cumulative percentage grade average below 70% for any class. The recommendations may include repeating a course, individual remediation, or program dismissal.

Graduation Requirements

All graduation requirements must be completed in no more than two academic years. Time missed for approved leaves of absence will not be counted in this two-year time frame. Graduation requires the following:

  • Completion of the course of instruction with a GPA > 3.0;
  • Recommendation of the faculty;
  • Compliance with other requirements of WCU; and
  • Compliance with all WCUMBS curricular, legal, and financial requirements, including the accurate and timely submission of the application for graduation.
