Requirements

Forty-five semester hours including the following major core, and one of three emphases.

THE 235 - Introduction to the Theatre Credit Hours: 3 or 4
THE 240 - Acting I Credit Hours: 3
THE 335 - Stagecraft Credit Hours: 3 or 4
THE 435 - Play Directing I Credit Hours: 3
THE 436 - Play Directing II Credit Hours: 3
THE 461 - Senior Seminar Credit Hours: 2
COM 375 - Phonetics and Voice and Diction Credit Hours: 3
Three emphases are available:

Emphasis in Design

An emphasis in design requires that 15 hours of the 45 be in the design/technology area (a minimum of nine design/tech hours must be upper level). These students are encouraged to minor in art, history, or philosophy.

Emphasis in Performance

An emphasis in performance requires that 15 of the 45 hours be in the acting/ dancing/directing area. These students are encouraged to minor in speech communication, dance, English, or psychology.

Emphasis in Musical Theatre

An emphasis in musical theatre requires that MUT 161 , six semester hours of voice, and three semester hours of piano or guitar be taken above the 45 hours (of which 12 hours will be in acting/dance/directing). These students may also want to consider a minor in dance.

Note:

The student who selects this major follows the degree plan for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). No more than six hours of theatre laboratory and/or rehearsal and performance courses may count toward this major. Theatre majors must complete a minor. Any student majoring in theatre must be active in the theatre program of the university during each trimester in residence.
